Chapter Eighteen

Sophia sensually rubbed his naked back. “You are my Adonis.”

“Am I? Who is he?”

“A Greek god.”

No, she misunderstood. He was referring to her other lover. “I know the reference. I mean my rival.”

For a moment, and it passed quickly, she tried to pretend confusion, but then sighed and gave him his answer. “A warrior prince, capable of anything except utter devotion. I know he has other women.”

“When you share his bed, how are we different?”

“You can’t ask that!”

“I just did.”

She stretched sensuously, the tips of her breasts brushing his bare chest. “He takes what he wants, but you give.”

He didn’t like it. Too contrived and he was a better writer than that in his opinion, so Glenn sat and thought about how he needed more inspiration. He reread the words, looked at the screen and thought they were not a perfect fit for the erotic tone of the novel, not even close. Then he abandoned his desk and went out onto the deck. Flashing blue-and-red lights, men in uniform, and using the telescope he could see Hanson out there talking to them.

Police officers. Two of them, in uniform and then they went into the house, obviously looking around. The place was illuminated like an attraction at an amusement park and he had to admit it added interest to his evening.

Between his wife’s absence and the Beautiful Trio, he was having an eventful week.

Why had he broken the window?

Pique perhaps, he wasn’t sure. Were the trio still intact or had Fletcher lost the battle? He thought he had because when he’d gone up on the porch, intending on an exploratory visit to see if he could gain any information, he’d seen Hanson passionately kissing his prize.

The surge of possessive jealousy took him by surprise.

That was his heroine, his own femme fatale. An incomparable muse.

Chris parked his SUV next to the squad car and climbed out into a humid Tennessee night. Frogs were singing in the trees, crickets chirping, and the water moved gently under the moonlight.

A gorgeous night. No rain. That threat had passed without fulfilling the promise.

He could have declined to address this call and left it to the patrol officers but had a feeling he should just set sleep aside for now. If one venture into the night could solve three cases — at least three of them — he was on board.

The uniformed officers were just coming out the front door as he got out of the car. He knew them, so he greeted them without much in the way of fanfare. “What’s going on here, guys?”

“Detective.” One answered with a nod. “Not much. A warning knock on the door and a broken window. It really was broken from the outside and even if they hadn’t called it in the alarm would have gone off. Someone wanted to get in. The owners are freaked out.”

“Three ongoing investigations of possible murders in the area make the caution understandable.”

One of them whistled. “Okay, that makes more sense now since you just showed up.
